Parenting... Cloth Diapers?

I'm sitting here holding Amelia while she sleeps. She's been very needy the past couple of days and will only sleep if she's in my arms and falling asleep while nursing. These are the kind of days I know I have to slow down because she needs me. Landen on the other hand is running around like a crazy boy - forget the nap today, even though he was up at 5:30 AM. I might have given him too much sugar while baking this very tasty Texas Cake this morning. Oops!

Wednesday we decided to skip story time at the library since it was going to be such a nice day. We met Rebecca and her son Ashton at the park. We had a picnic and let the kids play, while we talked and talked. It's hard for me to find people to be good friends with around here. We either but heads about parenting styles or beliefs. Luckily I've grabbed hold of Teri (hehe).. and we're getting to know Rebecca a lot better.

So anyway, we had a good time at the park playing. I like Landen to have a little guy to play with once in awhile.. they're so alike it's crazy. I also got to here Rebecca's reasons for using cloth diapers. Teri has taught me a lot and answered a lot of my questions, so we just had an extra bunch of info from Rebecca. I'm still on the fence about using them though. Teri is setting up a cloth diaper workshop for our December La Leche League meeting so I'm looking forward to that. I think I need to do a pro and con's worksheet. I have reasons I really want to use them and reasons why I don't like the idea. I like the fuzzi bunz, but not sure what's the best. Also they seem expensive, but in the long run you'll be saving money. Ahh! I'm not sure if I'll get many responses from this, but what do you all use & why? I know some of you that read this have already told me, but I'm curious about the others. =)

I also got to try on the Mei Tei wrap. It makes me want one even more! I found another kind of material I kind of liked, so will see if that works out for making one. If not, I'll just let her pick a material, we have similar taste so I'm not too worried about that. I want to start using the Mei Tei is as soon as Amelia gets a little better head control. She does really well in the Moby because the sides hold her head while she's sleeping. =)

I'm off to attempt a shower and get the crazy one to quit singing into the cord of the vacuum "oooh baby I love your ways"! That's what he's singing.. I'll take credit for that. Hahaha!

Ugh! Love this post! Got my blood pumping. ;)
I'm still wishing for a MT. Did I tell you I know someone who makes them for $35? We were going to buy one in August, then expenses came and the $ had to go elsewhere. :( I still really want one, though.

And cloth diapers...I think I am very near to saying I'll try them if and when we have another. Some of them are so stinkin cute! Aside from that, I love the option of being able to wash them when running low, instead of needing to go OUT to a store, etc. (and waiting on those coupons!)

Great post. :) I really enjoyed it.

I know you and Amelia are both going to love the mei tai once she's a bit bigger...it is my fav. one now that Tate is older! And as for cloth diapers...well, I have used them since Tate was born and I actually like them a lot!! I do use disposables though whenever we go away for the day or go somewhere for a morning or whatever. But at home, it's just cloth...I can't help you out TOO much on the kinds of diapers because my mom and I (mostly my mom...hee hee) sewed all of our cloth diapers. I do however have one called a pocket change diaper that is bought and I LOVE that one! It is really handy and soft and doesn't lose the softness when you wash it a million times...and yeah, I just like it a lot, so you might want to check those out...good luck with your decision! :)

What are the reasons you don't like the idea of CD'ing? Not that I'm trying to convince you or anything! =] But once I asked I found out some of my cons weren't even an issue after I learned how they really work.

I'm sure you're asking Andrea, but I'll jump in here. :)

I admit the idea kind of grosses me out. At first. Since I've learned more about CDs, not so much. (thank goodness!) The poopy diapers & having to swish them in the toilet (as opposed to pitching them in the trash) does not appeal to me. I'm not of strong stomach. ;)

The initial expense, too. Yet I know in the long run it's cheaper, so with careful planning, I'm sure this reason wouldn't be legit. (maybe saving DURING the pregnancy what you'd spend on disposables?)

So that's it for me. :) Sorry for jumping in. Hope that's ok!

I don't like the idea of the poop when they get older and you have to dump it and rinse them out real well. ICKY! I don't care when they're little and it's just breast milk poop, but once they get older. That's a major turn off towards them. And as Sharon said.. the intial expense.. that's why I would only want to try a couple at first to see. I'm kind of afraid of diaper rash... we've never had it so far and that makes me happy.
Sharon.. you can always jump in.
Thanks for everyone's comments so far .

I had some misconceptions about the washing routine also. We don't do any toilet swishing or soaking! We dump any solids and anything left over goes into the washer. I suppose that may sound gross but rinsing them beforehand would create an environment for bacteria to grow.
Yes there is an initial expense that is made up over time. If you are starting after the baby is born it would definitely be best to buy a couple at a time. And you know I say that is the best way to do it anyways!! Buy just a couple and make sure that particular style works for you before investing in a whole stash.
Diaper rash..that is a baby to baby thing and another reason it's good to buy just 1-2 and try them before buying more. I know people on both sides...some babies get rash from sposies some get them from cloth.
