I finally finished reading The Vaccine Book by Dr. Bob Sears. After telling everyone how anxious I was to get it and start reading it, it only took me about two months or
longer to get it finished. Not because it was bad, but because I had other ones I wanted to read and it's not one that you have to sit and continue to read or you'll forget everything. =)
longer to get it finished. Not because it was bad, but because I had other ones I wanted to read and it's not one that you have to sit and continue to read or you'll forget everything. =)So as promised I said I would give my quick review of the book.
Overall, it was really good and really got me more informed. I would say it's probably more of a pro-vaccine book than an anti-vaccine but gives you both sides pretty well. It almost made me feel though like I should more than I shouldn't vaccinate.
Did it help me make a decision?... well . . . not really. Why. . . because this is a decision I think I will struggle with forever. When and if we get them, or if we don't, I will always wonder if I'm/we are doing the right thing. I think vaccine's are good and that we would be in a world of hurt if we didn't have them. . . are they for everyone. . . I don't think so. Are we one of those people they may not be for. . . right now. . . yes. . . later. . . I don't know. Hmm!
I will continue to think and pray over this. I want to do the best thing for my children. In a way I think it might be the best to start Landen, but spread them out considerably, and opt out of selected shots. Will see and I'm sure to keep everyone updated.
More to the book - I think it's almost a must read for those who want to get informed and not just do something because everyone else is doing it, or their Dr. tells them too. Check it out and let me know what you think. Happy Reading!

Thanks for the review. :)
I constantly question whether or not I'm doing the right thing, especially on such a hot topic issue. The thing that always steers me is the overwhelming feeling I get inside, and then I feel content and believe I've made the right decision, at least for now. Mommy instinct is such a gift!
You sound like such a thoughtful mom, I'm sure you're doing what's best for Landen and Amelia. What a great start-having a mom like you who took the time to research the vaccines, rather than blindly stick to a government-set schedule! Good for you.
Did you ever even IMAGINE mothgerhood would be this confusing and scary and difficult? UGH! I drive myself NUTS trying to avoid sick people in public, wanting to sign Landon up for group activities and then chickening out at the last second, and worrying about his future as far as schoool goes :o(
At this point, I really am SCARED to start vaccinating (even though we promised ourselves originally that we'd start vaccinations at age two!). Sometimes I wish they were already done, sometimes I wouldn't dream of ever going near my son with a shot....At this moment, I'm thinking we'll probably just wait as long as possible and then just sort of do what Sharon was talking about and go with my gut. Let's all keep each other posted on thios one (I know we will!!)
I've GOT to get this book! Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. I think we are in the same position exactly that you describe -- wrong decision, right decision -- depends on the day. I appreciate your wisdom. Thanks, Andrea!
Sharon and Jenn ,
I'm glad to have you two that I can bounce questions off of. It is a very hard decision and it's great to know other people that do the research and are trying to do the best for their kids. One day I'm scared that my kids are going to catch something (um.. the whooping cough since we were sick) and then the next day I'm not afraid at all. I too usually go with my gut, talk to the hubby and go from there.
Sharon - what do you think with sending Aidan to pre school and him possibly bringing home something to Brennan? I know others have their shots, but what do you think about that?
April
You will have to let me know what you think of this book. Do your kids have all their shots now, a few, or none? Just curious. How did you come to that decision? I've never heard your thoughts on this. =)
